More information about: ADHD & Autism Evaluations
Welcome! I’m so glad you have found me and are curious to dive into better understanding your unique brain and how to best support it.
What is an ADHD / Autism diagnostic evaluation? Why get one?
Diagnostic evaluation is a collaborative process that takes place over multiple sessions. This is the process of determining whether a person meets clinical criteria for Autism and/or ADHD. I also explore OCD if I see symptoms, which often co-exists with ADHD and Autism.
How does knowing this change things? Nothing and EVERYTHING changes for some clients. It may help you understand why you have struggled in certain areas, and excelled in others, which we often refer to as a spiky profile. It may also shed light on why previous therapy approaches have not worked for you. I offer these assessments virtually or at my office.
What are the steps in the assessment process?
During this process, we will begin with a 75-minute intake where I gather social, educational and developmental history.
I will then send links to self-report measures and a sensory questionnaire to minimize the time and cost to you spent in session. We will then meet for 2 two-hour sessions where I will administer a qualitative assessment tool.
Last, we will meet to review the final working draft of the written report and recommendations.
What information is included in the clinical report?
A comprehensive clinical report includes both the evaluation outcomes and diagnosis, if indicated, as well as recommendations. This will also include sample accommodations for work and/or school. A separate letter for accommodations is available upon request. We can discuss what information you would like included in this letter or report if it is going to your school, college, or employer.
What makes Kimberly different than other assessors out there?
The last six years of deep diving into neurodivergence, training, and consultation has led me to specialize in identification of high-masking, late-diagnosed women, AFAB and BIPOC older teens and adults. I have a specific interest in helping those in perimenopause sort out what is related to hormonal changes and what may be ADHD traits or autistic burnout symptoms. This includes differentiating between autistic burnout and depression, and sometimes it is both. Often I see high-achieving adults who are stuck in the AuDHD boom and bust cycle, and offer guidance to help break that cycle and recover from burnout. I stay up-to-date daily on the latest research, clinical trends, podcasts, books and trainings on neurodivergence.
As a neurodivergent clinician myself, I see patterns that others miss, as well as sensory needs, and interests that may be overlooked by clinicians trained to see Autism and ADHD in a stereotypical way. I am also skilled in differentiating between OCD and trauma, which often obscures neurodivergent traits. As one client told me, “you helped me figure out that I am not a broken neurotypical person, but a perfect autistic one.”
I have provided consultation and training to over 40 other clinicians in Maryland around identification, missed diagnoses, and misdiagnoses that I frequently see in neurodivergent clients who make their way to my office. I have provided training to clinics in Massachusetts, at the college level, and to an Intensive Outpatient Program. I am often asked to review lengthy neuropsychological reports where evaluators have missed the evidence supporting an ADHD and/or Autism diagnosis. I also participate in a neuro-affirming assessment based bi-weekly clinical consultation group facilitated by Dr. Jessica Hogan, PsyD.
Do you take insurance for these assessments?
Currently, the assessments I offer are private pay, fee for service only. Using private pay services allows clients to have more autonomy over how, when, and with whom their information is shared, and under what circumstances.
This is particularly important for those with certain security clearances, in fields such as aviation, for people who are vulnerable to systematic discrimination, and those who (for whatever personal reason) would prefer to keep this out of their formal medical records.
